Proverbs 31: 10-12 - Being a Wife

Isn't this passage of Scripture asking a lot of us as women? Well, yes! Yes, it is!!! How in the world can we as human, fallen women do all the things that are listed in this chapter?!? Thats an interesting thought. Every time I read this chapter in Proverbs I realize how lacking my own life is. The good news is, we cannot do this on our own. Ladies, I know for me I am FAR from this "Perfect Woman" or "The Excellent Wife" that is described in verses 10-31.  I have a long way to go. One of the ladies that I read while I was studying this passage of scripture mentioned Hebrews 12:1-2 as a good verse to put with this chapter. It says:

"Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us,
and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith,
who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross,
despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

This is a great verse to put into perspective that we cannot be "The Excellent Wife" on our own. We cannot do this by ourselves. We have to have our eyes on Jesus. It means something that when we rise early in the morning we spend time in God's Word. It focuses our minds and hearts on Him for the day. As hard as this is, it doesn't stop me from striving for this as my goal. I love finding godly women in the Bible or descriptions like this one of what a godly women should look like.  This is somewhere to go and to look to see how I am suppose to live. To see what my daily life should look like.

I think I have basically written another introduction but I heard those few things and thought it was important to expound on it a little. We need Jesus every. single. day! We are not called to live an easy life we are called to live a life that honors God and that means we cannot do it on our own! The sooner we realize that the better! Focus on Christ! He is the author and finisher of our faith!

Now the Proverbs scripture I am looking at today is: Proverbs 31:10-12

"Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.
The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil all the days of her life."

Who can find this kind of woman?? She is a rare BUT she does exist. At least women that strive to look like this in their daily lives. Let us be this woman that is rare to find. Be that kind of woman for your man. If you're not married, its ok! Learn now, to be this kind of woman so that when a man is seeking this kind of woman you are the rare jewel that he is looking to find.

The heart of her husband safely trusts in her! It is important that your husband trusts you. This king needed a woman that he could trust! Be so dedicated to him that he doesn't feel the need to put a jealous guard up around you at all times.

She does him good and not evil all the days of her life. This is important. We need to be an asset to our husbands. We need to be encouraging,  respectful, lift him up and do not tear him down. Our husbands have a lot riding on them at work and other places their home is not a place that should bring them down. Their home and wife should be a place that encourages and helps them in their day to day walk!

As a summary:

~ We cannot do this on our own! Focus on Christ as you look at these verses. Focus on what He has called you to be as a woman and know that He is here to help us be all that we are called to be!

~ Be the rare woman that is worth so much more than rubies.

~ Be so dedicated to your husband (or future husband) that he trusts you without a jealous guard up around you!

~Be a source of encouragement to your husband and not a hindrance that bring him down.

Pray that you will daily put Jesus first and seek to honor Him in all that you do and I am thinking, somehow this whole "Excellent Wife" thing will not seem quite so daunting. *maybe* =)

Proverbs 31:1-9 - An Introduction

Proverbs 31:1-9
"The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him:
What are you doing my son? What are you doing, son of my womb?
What are you doing son of my vows? Do not give your strength to women,
your ways to those who destroy kings. It is not for kings to drink wine,
or for rulers to take strong drink, lest they drink and forget what has been decreed
and pervert the rights of all the afflicted. Give strong drink to the one
who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress, let them drink and
forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. Open your mouth
for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth,
judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy."

I am not going to spend a whole lot of time here on these verses but I do think it is important to at least read them and see the context for the later verses that we will be spending quite a bit if time on.

These vereses and the "Excellent Wife" verses were written by a wife and mother. They were written to her son. She is telling her son what to look out or avoid for as a king. She tells him in these first few verses that he is not to give himself to women and to not drink strong drink. She is trying to help him understand how to live to be a good king. After she tells him what to avoid she tells him of things he should be doing. Like speaking for the mute and those that are destitute, judge righteously, defend the poor and the needy. These are all things that he should be doing. After these few things then she starts in verse 10 telling her son what an excellent wife looks like. What he should be looking for in a wife. The "Excellent Wife" verses are very popular. but it is so interesting to think that those verses were written by a wife and mother!! That is so cool to me! Maybe this tidbit will help as we study the next 22 verses maybe this gives you a different perspective as you read them!

Honestly, I am not so sure that I would want to be this lady's daughter-in-law.  Those are some pretty high standards she is about to give for what to look for in a wife. That would be some serious pressure!!

*According to John MacArthur's commentary on this verse he says that it was likely that this oracle was written for King Solomon from his mother.

Elisabeth Elliot Quote

This is definitely a convicting quote. As I start studying for my first Bible Study Series on Proverbs 31. I think this quote is very fitting. Lets be consistently striving to be godly women and be an encouragement to our husbands (or if you're not married be encouraging to the men that interact with you) to be better men! Elisabeth Elliot is an amazing woman and definitely someone you should read if you have the opportunity. She is an amazing and Godly woman. She definitely has knowledge we can glean from as women.

Introduction to my Bible Study Blog Series

Im going to try to start a blog post series! I keep trying to be consistent with blogging but I feel like it is same old same old and most of the friends that follow me on here also follow me on FB and IG so its really nothing new under the sun.

I always love Bible Studies and I have always wished I was well written enough to write my own studies but I'm really not a great writer but that doesn't matter in the blog world and on the world wide web. Anyone can write about anything. So here goes for writing a Bible Study blog series.

Im starting with a Proverbs 31 study because I feel like that is a fitting place to start. A place the is common yet every time I reread it, it is also convicting. I plan to go through it exegetically. Verse by verse and talk about what the passage means to girls and women. Teenagers, single, married, moms, etc. This passage deals with each and every one of us. So, tune back in for my first post! =)

I am still not sure how often I will write, everyday, every week, every other week. I know I need to make it a challenge for myself or it will not happen. So, here goes, blog world. I have made a decision....Bible Study Blog Series, here we go!!!
